Is Medicaid an Option for You?
Long-term care, whether in a home setting or a community, can be costly. This leaves most families wondering how it will be paid for in the short term or well into the future.
Some families have long-term care policies that will cover some or all of the cost- please ask your trusted insurance agent for coverage benefits to know exactly what is covered. Most policies do have some limits or a coverage waiting period, please be sure to ask.
For others, it may be the use of savings, retirement plans or the selling of assets. When those are nearly exhausted, or minimal to start with, Medicaid may be able to help. Basic limits to assets would be $4000 or less in funds, own a home, or a car. There are restrictions to income and asset values, so you need to be transparent about your assets, to ensure proper eligibility with the state.
If you think you can gift away asset to qualify - think again. Medicaid has a five-year look back on assets you’ve held or gifted to others.
