Having a Plan for Success When Transitioning into Senior Living
Transitioning from a family home to a senior living community can be challenging, but with thoughtful planning and support, it can become a smooth and positive experience. Here are some key steps we use to guide our clients and their families for success:
1. Start with Open Communication
• Discuss needs, preferences, and concerns early.
• Involve your aging loved one in the decision-making process to ensure they feel heard and respected.
2. Assess the Level of Care Needed
• Evaluate whether they need independent living, assisted living, or specialized care (e.g., memory care).
• Consult your trusted healthcare professionals if unsure.
3. Tour Senior Living Communities
• Visit potential communities to explore the environment, amenities, and social opportunities. Work with one of our Senior Living Advisors to make sure you’re touring the best matches to avoid wasting time.
• Ask about medical care, staff qualifications, religious preferences, financial matters, and activities.
4. Declutter and Downsize
• Help your loved one decide which items to keep, donate, or pass on.
• Consider hiring a senior move manager to assist with downsizing- let them do the heavy lifting!
5. Create a Familiar Environment
• Bring personal items, furniture, and decor to make their new space feel like home.
• Include meaningful objects like photos, blankets, or favorite books.
6. Plan the Move Strategically
• Schedule the move during a time when the senior is least likely to feel overwhelmed.
• Arrange professional movers experienced in senior relocations, if needed.
7. Provide Emotional Support
• Acknowledge the feelings about leaving their home and memories behind, it’s hard at every age, but especially when one is leaving behind a home they have built a life around .
• Encourage them to stay connected with friends, family, and previous communities.
8. Ease the Transition
• Visit them frequently during the adjustment period.
• Encourage participation in social activities and hobbies in the new community.
9. Address Financial and Legal Matters
• Review contracts and costs of the senior living community. Consider both the short-term and long-term ability to pay for senior living.
• Ensure any necessary legal documents, like wills or powers of attorney, are up-to-date. Work with a Medicaid planner to help with the application process when appropriate.
10. Work with Professionals
• Collaborate with real estate agents, like Welcome Home Team, to sell the current home.
• Seek guidance from financial advisors or elder care consultants if needed. Use a trusted Senior Real Estate Specialist, like Jonie Sturek.
